Dear
athletes, play football with dedication and enthusiasm, but do not
forget the need to save your souls, because he who loses his soul
has lost everything; a footballer’s main concern must be the saving
of his soul:
“I
need to save my soul, that is: reach heaven and avoid eternity in
hell. There is no middle ground. Saving my soul is the reason for my
creation, my Redemption; it is my reason for living”
(Saint Peter Julian Eymard).
Beware of the
vanities offered by a world that is the enemy of God and the
immortal souls! The world cannot satisfy our soul, it is empty and
evil; only Eternal God can bring joy to a soul that He has created:
We were made
for happiness, to be happy:
“Our
hearts have a capacity for the infinite, and only God can satisfy it
perfectly”
(Blessed Columba Marmion).
All the
material goods, applause of supporters, trophies and triumphs cannot
bring joy to an athlete’s soul, only God can make it happy.
Wretched be
the athlete who turns his back on God and lives with an empty soul;
he will never be happy:
“Woe
betide the soul that does not know the Christ who has cultivated it
diligently, so that the good fruit of the Spirit can germinate! It
will end its days deserted, covered with thorns and thistles, and
burnt rather than bearing fruit. Woe betide that soul, if the Lord,
Christ does not dwell there! Abandoned, it will fill with the foul
smell of passion, and become the dwelling place of vice”
(Saint Macarius).
Only the Lord
that created us deserves all our love, not half our love, but love
with all our heart; he who does not love God is unhappy in this
world and has an empty soul:
“There
is no doubt that God deserves our infinite love, for all the goods
that he has given us here on Earth, as well as all those that await
us in heaven”
(M. Hamon).
Beware of
friendships! There are many selfish, false people who will draw up
with the sole intention of taking advantage of the goodness of
others... but their intentions are not right.
Do good while
there is time. Do not throw your life away like thousands of
athletes are doing; but be ready to meet Jesus Christ after death.
I pray for
you, your families, the directors and supporters of this friendly
team.
I bless you
and keep you in the Holy Heart of Jesus Christ.
Regards,
Father Divino Antônio
Lopes FP.
