Dear footballers, dedicate
yourselves to sport without turning your back on the Creator;
because it is impossible to overcome the obstacles in your path when
you are far from God:
“In
the Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can man do to me?”
(Psalm 56, 10-11).
An athlete must not be a slave to
sport, or to fame, or to money... but must rather be a free
person... and, to be free, it is necessary to be at peace with God
and to follow his commandments faithfully.
Gentlemen, true freedom is not
found in vice or sin; but in God. He who walks together with the
Lord lives in true freedom
Freedom is not found in
drunkenness, gluttony, noise, prostitution, immorality... but rather
in renouncing and keeping away from everything that does not please
God.
Father Alexandrino Monteiro
writes: “Say
that you are free! But look at your conscience that has been torn
apart by the gnawing vermin of remorse, and does not leave you a
moment of peace and joy. Look at your dreams, how they are chained
to sin! Be free, young man! You, who travel everywhere extolling
freedom, be the first to use it. Free yourself of your bad habits,
to which you are chained and which do not allow you to walk through
the pleasant, flowery meadows of virtue. Release the yoke of sin
that is enslaving you, putting you at the service of the devil and
reducing you to the level of irrational beings. Be free, like
Samson, shattering the bonds that keep your hands from working at
the service of the Lord. Be free, trampling underfoot the cowardice
that leads so many Christians away from the temple and religious
practice, making them ashamed of publicly confessing their beliefs.
Be free and not a slave! Free, like those who serve God should be,
and do not let yourself be dominated by the tyranny of human respect”.
Remember that life is short... and
all things pass never to return; it is necessary to do good, and
love God above everything else. He who does not live for God has a
sad, angry heart.
It is impossible to find the truth
peace far from God's Law:
“Great
peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them
stumble”
(Psalm 119, 165).
Be young men of God and flee from
selfish and dangerous friendships.
I pray for you, your families, the
directors and supporters of this hard-working team.
I bless you and keep you in the no
Heart of the Most Holy Mary.
Regards,
Father Divino Antônio Lopes FP.
