To the footballers of Alpha United
Football Club – Georgetown (Demerara-Mahaica Province) – Guyana
Circular No. 1
Anápolis GO – (Brazil), November
15, 2012
Dear athletes, play sport but do
not turn your backs on God, because He alone can satisfy an
immortal, spiritual soul. Do not fail to progress with the Law of
God because of the temporary things of this world:
“Blessed are the undefiled in
the way, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are they that keep
his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart! They also
do no iniquity: they walk in his ways”
(Psalms 118, 1-3).
No creature
can bring true happiness to the heart of man; only God can bestow
pure joy... it is very wise to live in the presence of the Lord:
“But it is good for me to draw near to God!”
(Psalms 72, 28).
Footballers
cannot scorn God’s friendship because of sport... they cannot allow
their immortal souls feed on the obsolete things of Earth, but must
live at one with God:
“My spirit
became dry because it forgot to rest in Thee”
(Saint John of the Cross).
Dear friends,
do not abandon God because of the difficulties and temptations that
may lie before you, but continue to strive for a holy life...
because God tests those that He loves:
“Moreover let
us give thanks to the Lord our God, which trieth us, even as he did
our fathers. Remember what things he did to Abraham, and how he
tried Isaac, and what happened to Jacob. For he hath not tried us in
the fire, as he did them, for the examination of their hearts,
neither hath he taken vengeance on us: but the Lord doth scourge
them that come near unto him, to admonish them.”
(Judith 8, 25-26a. 27).
Many athletes
despair before the obstacles that arise in life. But it is not with
despair that we resolve our problems, nor by turning our backs on
God... but rather by humbling ourselves before God and asking for
his protection, because we may trust in God:
“O Lord of
hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee!”
(Psalms 83, 13).
Dear friends,
read from the Holy Scripture every day and endeavour to put what you
read into practice.
Carry out
good deeds because life is short and death sends no warnings:
“But
as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good.”
(2 Thessalonians 3, 13).
I pray for you, for the board and
for fans of this friendly team.
I bless you and keep you in the
Kind heart of Jesus Christ.
Faithfully,
Fr. Divino Antônio Lopes FP.
