To the footballers of
Pelé Football Club – Georgetown (Demerara-Mahaica Province) – Guyana
Circular No. 1
Anápolis GO – (Brazil),
November 15, 2012
Honourable footballers,
play football joyfully and enthusiastically, but never forget that
life is short and goes by never to return:
“Remember how short my time is: wherefore
hast thou made all men in vain?
What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? Shall he
deliver his soul from the hand of the grave?”
(Psalms 88,
48-49).
Always remember that
athletes are neither immortal nor supermen... they do not live
forever... they are also just pilgrims in this world:
“Have no doubt that we are pilgrims and
wanderers here on Earth: Our home is in heaven” (Saint Cajetan).
Gentlemen, knowing that
our lives are short, we must do good whilst there is still time...
remaining on the holy path, because without such perseverance it
will be impossible to achieve Eternal Life... he who stops along the
way, will never reach his chosen destination:
“Without perseverance, it is impossible to
achieve holiness or salvation: it is not enough for us to be
virtuous and generous on some days or for some years; we need to be
so always, until the end”
(Father
Gabriel de Santa Maria Madalena).
Footballers are not excused from carrying out good deeds; they are
God’s children and must work fervently to earn their place in
heaven. Nothing in this world can stand in the way of an athlete’s
path to heaven... and he who lets difficulties prevent him from
following this path will be set on the road to eternal damnation:
“Stepping away from good, from the road of faith and of following
Christ, means endangering your own salvation... He who backs away,
voluntarily condemns himself and will never reach his goal: he is
weak, wicked, a deserter; whereas
Christians must be to be strong, intrepid and perseverant”
(Idem).
Be
friends with God and flee from dangerous friendships. There are
people who are friends only when it is in their interest to be so...
and cannot be found when times are hard:
“Sever
yourselves from such a man, whose breath is in his nostrils”
(Isaiah 2, 22).
Read a
part of the Holy Scripture every day.
I will pray for you, your families, and the fans of this valiant
team.
I bless you and keep you in the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary.
Faithfully,
Fr. Divino Antônio Lopes FP.
